Manchester’s own Pistol Prodigies Youth Shooting Team, competed in the Scholastic Action Shooting Program (SASP) National Championships on July 15th. The Prodigies have 17 members, but were represented by six shooters at Nationals: Hannah Foltz, Eli Lobbestael, Andrew Hartley, Nathan Huddleston, Phoebe Huddleston, and Braden Osborne. Hannah, Eli, Andrew, Nathan all competed in both pistol and rifle. Phoebe shot rifle only, and Braden shot pistol only.
Squads from around the country competed, with around 550 entries in rifle and pistol. When the scores were all tallied, Manchester’s team was in the middle of the pack. Coach Scott Poet stated, “We were very happy with our finish, as many of these squads have been competing in the SASP for five years. Our team is just finishing our second year, and four of our shooters have only been with the team for about three months or less. In fact, for two of our shooters, this was their very first match!”
Every competition has four shooting stages during which each athlete shoots five times. The slowest time/score from each stage is thrown out, leaving the four fastest times/scores for each of the four stages. These 16 scores are added together, along with the athlete’s squad mate’s times/scores, to come up with an aggregate score for the squad. Then all the squads are placed in ranking order, from fastest to slowest, in each age division. There are rifle divisions for all age groups, and pistol divisions for sixth graders and up.
“Individually, our team did great,” Poet stated, “SASP National Director of Development, Rick Leach, challenged each shooter to shoot a “perfect stage.” Each shooter that did would receive a hat, and bragging rights. Shooting a “perfect stage” means shooting a 5-target stage, five times, with no misses, shooting only 25 shots, as quickly as you can. We are proud to say that five of our six shooters shot at least one “perfect stage.” Andrew actually shot his “perfect stage” seven times as there were two timer malfunctions. Hannah was the first to get her “perfect stage” hat. She is also the only member of our team to compete in every match since the team was started in September 2014. Phoebe followed up her “perfect stage” at our State Championship Match with another at Nationals. Nathan shot very well all day, including his perfect stage. And Braden, our newest shooter, shot his perfect stage at his very first match ever. What a way to start off his shooting journey.”
Each shooting stage has a unique steel target arrangement. Some steel targets are as close as 24’, some as far away as 75’. So each stage has its own challenge. Every team member shot at least one new personal best time. Poet reported, “The team’s favorite stage is called “Go-Fast.” And they do exactly that, go fast!” The national record on this stage is 1.26 seconds. Prior to Nationals, Pistol Prodigies had not broken the 2:00 second mark. “At Nationals,” Poet continued, “we did not break 2:00 seconds once, twice, or even three times. It was broken four times! Andrew was the first to break it in 1.95 seconds with his rifle. Eli then shot 1.88 and 1.84 with his rifle and 1.89 with his pistol. Now, that’s fast! Eli set multiple team “best times” for the Prodigies. We foresee even faster times in the future.”
The coaches also got into the shooting action at Nationals. Coach Franz, Coach Scott and Coach Lisa all participated in the Coaches Challenge in which they could shoot pistol or rifle, on the same stages that the team shoots. All three coaches opted to shoot rifle. When the coaches shot, the kids were given the opportunity to “coach” the coaches. Poet elaborated, “The whole team loved this. The best part was when a coach made a mistake, which they are always correcting on our shooters. The kids loved being in charge, even if only for a few minutes.”
Poet stated that unlike many other teams in the SASP, he and Coach Lisa see their team as a family. “You will often hear them refer to the team as our kids,” he said. “We have a special bond with the kids that enable everyone to work together to improve their skills, being safe, and having fun.”
The team has one match left this season on August 6th at the Western Wayne County Conservation Association in Plymouth. They are currently looking for shooters to join for their new season, which starts September 1st.

SPP National Championship Match 2015
World Shooting and Recreation Complex, Sparta, IL
The Pistol Prodigies had the opportunity to compete in the Scholastic Pistol Program's (SPP) National Championship Match in Sparta, Illinois on July 19, 2015. The World Shooting And Recreation Complex (WSRC) hosted the event, where approximately 360 student athletes competed in Rimfire and Centerfire competitions divided into Junior, Senior, and Collegiate divisions.
SPP competitions are speed shooting on steel targets. Shooting quick is great, but you must hit every target or you will get a 3-second "speeding ticket" for each miss. So if you miss a target, you have to shoot at it again until you hit it to avoid the penalty. Once the "Stop" target is hit, you elapsed time (plus any penalties) is recorded on the score sheet. The kids shoot each stage 5 times, with the slowest time being thrown out. The other 4 times are added up to achieve a stage time.
We traveled 500 miles on Thursday, so we would be rested and ready to go on Friday the 19th. The morning of competition we were able to practice and get warmed up. Unfortunately getting "warmed up" would have another meaning. That afternoon it got to be 95*! With practice done, we had a quick lunch and headed back to the range for our Safety Briefing prior to shooting.
After the briefing, we were assigned to our first course of fire, "Speedtrap". This stage, like all the other SPP stages, consists of 5 steel targets at varying distances, where 4 of the 5 can be shot in any order, but the "Stop" plate must be shot last. Speed trap has one target that is 75 feet away from the shooter, making it one of the harder stages to shoot.
"In & Out" was the next stage. Here there are 2 targets at 24 feet, 2 targets at 54 feet, and the "Stop" in the middle at 36 feet. The 2 near targets and the 2 far targets are spaced about 12 feet apart, and when you factor in the "Stop" plate, you essentially have an "X" pattern. But be careful, you have to shoot all 4 corners, before you hit the center or else you'll receive a couple of 3-second penalties.
The next stage that the team shot is the team favorite, "Go-Fast." Just like it's name implies, Go-Fast is FAST!! Here, there are 4 targets lined up in a row 30 feet from the shooter, each 4 feet from the next. The "Stop" is in the center at 24 feet. The goal here is to shoot the 4 far targets, then come back to the center to stop the clock. Most of the team can shoot this in the 2 1/2 to 3 seconds! It's not uncommon for a 4-run "total" time to be about 11 seconds. This is where the team "cuts loose" and has a blast!
Our final stage was "Focus". "Focus" could be the hardest stage, as every target is at a different distance from the shooter. The "Stop" target is 24 feet away, but must be shot last, and each other target is 6 feet farther back, and 8 feet apart. When you get all the way out to the farthest target, you are 48 feet away. Like "Go-Fast", "Focus" lives up to it's name. Each shooter must focus on each target, taking distance into consideration.
The team shot well, but since we wouldn't have the results until Saturday, we all retired back to the campground for dinner and some relaxation. After dinner the temps were still near triple digits, so most of the team decided to cool off with a water fight!! The coaches and parents laughed as the kids blew off some steam and had a blast.
Saturday we were up with a good breakfast and went exploring the merchant area as well as the trap competitions. SPP is the sister organization of the SCTP (Scholastic Clay Target Program), which holds there Nationals at WSRC at the same time. SPP has been around for about 4 years, but SCTP is more than twice that old. And as a result, there were about 2,100 kids shooting clays.
3pm Saturday afternoon were the SPP awards. Gold, Silver and Bronze medals were given to the quickest 3 squads in each division. And while the Pistol Prodigies didn't medal, they did turn in some pretty impressive runs. But most importantly, they had a GREAT time! And while everyone likes to win, they know that "Honoring The Game" and having good sportsmanship is the ultimate goal of the program. No amount of skill or personal level of competition is worth being "unsportsmanlike."
Our team is just finishing it's 1st year of competition, with 1 Local Match remaining on August 8th. From the group of kids, some not knowing each other, that began to come together in September of 2014, to now, we have grown into a strong, tight knit team that really enjoys shooting, and the camaraderie it brings. Every shooter is safe, responsible and respectful of others. And it is an HONOR to be associated with our "kids!"
On behalf of the Pistol Prodigies, we would like to thank the following for making our 1st year outstanding:
Thank you!

Our 1st Local Match
October 18th, 2014 at WWCCA
The Pistol Prodigies attended their 1st Match on Saturday October 18th, 2014. It was hosted by the Western Wayne County Conservation Association Straight Shooters Team in Plymouth, MI. The day started off a rainy dreary day of 50 degrees. By the time the shooting started, the rain subsided, but the temps stayed very cool.
The competition is speed shooting on steel targets. All of our Team Members are in the Junior Division, 12-16, and shooting Rimfire. There are 4 Stages of Fire. Each shooter shoots each Stage 5 times, with the slowest time being thrown out. There is a maximum time of 30 seconds allowed for each run. The aggregate of 4 runs on 4 Stages is the total time per shooter. Each Team is broken down into 4-person Squads. The aggregate time of the 4 Squad Members is added together for a Squad total. We took 7 shooters, so there was 1 full Squad and 1 Squad with a "ghost" shooter.
Joe Cafarelli, Scholastic Pistol Program State Advisor, started the competition off with a Safety Briefing. After everything was explained, the Teams were sent to the Stages of Fire where they would start. The Prodigies started off at "In & Out." Our 7 shooters made our Coaches and Parents very proud. And the Coaches received compliments from the Range Officers (RO) and Safety Officers (SO) on how well the kids shot, how safe they were, and the skills that each exhibited. The RO's and SO's were amazed that our Team had only been shooting together for about 6 weeks.
The Team continued on to "Go Fast," "Focus," and "Speed Trap." Each Stage had it's unique challenge, but our shooters were up to the challenge. The occasional "mulligan" was needed if there was an ammunition malfunction. And once in a while a Stage "just wouldn't go right." But our Team never got frustrated. If a run wasn't great, our shooters would shake it off, and make a better run the next time.
There were 25 total Student Athletes, comprising 7 squads. The Pistol Prodigies took 2nd and 3rd in their respective division. And individually, our Team had 2 shooters in the Top 12. Some of our competition was from the Senior Division (17-20) and some from the Collegiate Division. Some of these other shooters had been competing for 3 years.
We were very happy with how our Team performed, and we can't wait until our next meet! So on behalf of Coach Scott, Coach Lisa, and Coach Mike, we would like to say Congratulations and Good Job to: Brayden, Camri, Drew, Hannah, Jorren, Kenzie, & Ryan!! You made us proud!
